Jesse and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Night

So Jesse is finishing up his first ENT rotation. It's one of those rotations I pray gets over soon. I then come to the sad realization that we have four more years of this rotation.
ENT'S take call from home. This means that the nights Jesse is on call he doesn't have to sleep at the hospital, he gets to come home but let me tell you, so far there has been little sleeping involved and to make matters worse there's no post call. This means that no matter how little sleep he gets, he still has to report to work between 5:15 and 5:45 the next morning. Most residents who take call get off the next day at noon so that they can sleep. Not so for ENTs.

So here's how Jesse's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Night began.

Jesse returned home from work at about 7:30 pm. After giving everybody a welcome home kiss (he hadn't seen the kids in 3 days) he reports that he has to go back up in 20 minutes to admit a patient for Dr. P. It seems this is a close friend of Dr. P, so the admittance couldn't wait till morning. I hope the next time Dr. P is eating an ice cream cone, the ice cream part falls off and lands in Australia.
We could tell it was going to be a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Night.

So back up to the hospital he goes just 15 minutes after returning home from work. He came back home at about 11:30. Fifteen minutes later his pager goes off and back up to the hospital he goes. We could tell it was going to be a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Night.

He came home, for the third time, and finally got to bed at around 2:30 or so. He slept for about an hour to an hour and a half and his pager goes off again. We could tell it was going to be a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Night.

So back up to the hospital Dr. Knight goes to reattach a tube in someones neck. We could tell it was going to be a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Night.

As he is walking in the hospital doors Wally (the senior resident) pages him and said he got the tube attached and Jesse could just go back home.

Back to bed at around 4:30 only to have to wake up at 5:15 to get ready to go to work. We could tell it was going to be a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad (now) Day.

So out the door our committed doctor goes at around 5:30 in order to start the day, with only an hour to an hour and a half sleep. I am sure it was a sleepy, tired, no fun, very rough day.
Now about a half an hour later I'm woken up by Jack screaming, "I'm choking, I'm choking". Take it from me, I've had a sleepy, tired, but not so hard, pretty fun day.

It is now (almost) 5 o'clock and there's no sign of Jesse. I suppose he will be getting home between 8 and 9, which has been par for the course during this rotation. I'm sure it was a sleepy, tired, no fun, very rough day.

Maybe we'll move to Australia.

I have to be the first to comment. Even though today was a bit tiring, I thoroughly enjoyed this post and love how clever you are. I didn't mind Dr. P's patient so much, but Dr. N at infamous Outside Hospital really deserves to have his ice cream catapulted to Mars!

I bet Jesse had a smile on his face the entire time too! You all are amazing! Just remember, every day that passes is one day closer to the 5 year residency being OVER! Yeah!

Christie, you are the best also, mom, wife, sister, aunt, friend, and daughter of a loving Heavenly Father who knows your needs and strengths. Hang on! hugs

You told me about this over the phone but it sounds even worse reading it. Glad you are all able to count your blessings and make the best of your really good life.
